CAREER 24. MEET THE BIG BOSS.

JUST SO YOU HAVNT SEEN IT
We are introduced to a big boss in Nigeria who has a big house, car and a position for someone who uses career24. So the guy (no the boss at this time) browses on the company website, dresses up and before we know what’s going on, is seen in the office of the big boss (whose character is by the way played by Akin Luis. That awkward handshake though.

FIRST THOUGH
Is that an advert?

SCORE – 2/10
There is not much to be said. The whole concept is not real and extremely exaggerated what  we are made to believe is that one you go on career 24, you get your dream job at the snap of your fingers. Seriously? To a Nigerian audience? In this current state of the economy?

what we expected to see especially for an ad like that is a site that opens to limitless opportunities in all fields both skilled and un skilled. The angle the advertisers should have gone with is giving hope to an average un employed youth showing them employment opportunities that are available even where they do not expect and not telling them that things will happen at the snap of their fingers.

IT’S A LIE.

IF YOU LIKE IT..
Nah. You won’t like it.

MTN SAM TO SPACE.

MTN - SAM TO SPACE

JUST SO YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT;
A boy imagines he can communicate with space and so begins to work on it. Armed with a reliable internet connection to do his researches, a workstation close to the family room, support ( in the way of silence) from his family and a rugged determination, time after time he tries again. Building better antennas, better researches and so on. ( three was the number of attempts shown in the ad but we like to think the kid did more than just that) finally he is successful at communicating with space and everyone is shocked and happy. (his mum even drops the tray of food she is carrying) the astronaut he is speaking to in space speaks Japanese and so he is back on the computer trying to learn Japanese.

SCORE – 8/10
…and here is why.
The first scene in the ad is an eyeball. The boy’s eyeball as he was captured daydreaming about being able to communicate with space and from that instant, we are taken throughout he struggle to achieve his aim. We are captured immediately and drawn to the boy and at that instant when he finally got to hear from space, (his facial expression was magical) we were so happy for him. That moment was the climax. That moment, we were all in. also, up until then, we didn’t know what product or service was being advertised until the screen came up and we knew it was MTN.

It was an ingenious move to sell the story and let the story sell the product.  A nice watch and a cool spoof.
Picture quality was good. The acting was on point (we think the boy deserves an award) and all the teeny tiny details enjoyed enough attention.

FACT FILE
The ad was shot and produced in South Africa by Mtn. the space shot was done in a simulator advertisers did was send the script to NASA and request for the single shot.

IF YOU LIKE IT –
Then you will like all the other Mtn classic commercials.

TOP 5 TV COMMERCIALS YOU SHOULD MISS. REALLY. MISS IT

5, ACCESS BANK – MOVING FAST.
Personally, it has not yet been understood in what way this bank is faster that all the others. We are not convinced at all. In fact, it still cannot be understood how a superfast train relates to the bank especially since it is not in any way part of their insignia. Or is it because their catch phrase is Moving Forward? Well, event snails move forward o.

4, HARPIC 5X – WITH CHIOMA AKPOTHA
This ad is on this list for share boredom. We want to see something new and different because we know there are a lot of other ways a toilet cleaner can be advertised. The Chioma thingy was good for the first year it was aired. Now we want to see something else. We demand another.  Though on one side we are glad the Mr Muscle advert has finally stopped being aired.

3, ZINOX – IYANYA KUKERE
Ok. After so much thought and sleepless nights, we get it. They were trying to appeal to the young people. Well, technology is no longer an exclusive reserve of the young. It has been thrust into every aspect of the society and the age barrier has been broken and to think that an it giant like Zinox has not realised that?
Why was the staff (as we were made to believe that who they are) in an Iyanya frenzy? Didn’t they have work to do? And why did he come to Zenox towers? Was there a party? Its just confusion all the way.
2,  HYPO – BRIGHT CISTERNS.
We just see the product and a bright sparkly cistern. No doubt the message was simple and direct but it’s also lazy and rude. Make an effort please.

1, THREE CROWNS MILK – DON’T YOU WISH YOUR MUMMY WAS….. LIKE MINE
So now we want others to wish their mums were like ours because she serves three crowns milk all the time abi? Good concept. The execution however was terrible.

 Where do we begin?

The voices were not pleasing to the ears. Yes, we get it, they wanted it to sound natural but the voices were not singing the song in harmony neither was there any melody at all and couldn’t the original instrumentation of the song or something close have been used? They almost ruined that song for a lot of us. Ovaltine walking on sunshine is an ad they should have emulated in that area. The actors were also not natural. It seemed to us that they were forced to take part in the ad. The attempt to celebrate the Nigerian woman in their care for the family went all wrong. Taking milk could be exciting and make us want to use the product. A classic example is Peak Choco’s “I want tea “. We could go on really.
NOT IMPRESSIVE AT ALL. DIDN’T MAKE US WANT TO CONSUME THE PRODUCT.

TOP 5 TV COMMERCIALS ON AIR NOW

5 – AIRTEL  - always on. (goat sellers)
This funny ad is a good watch though the product being advertised isn’t as efficient. Still, we love the antics of the goat sellers.

4 – COKE   - share Coca-Cola with…..
Nice ring to the sound track. It just gets stuck in your head if you not careful. Jennifer and Bovi’s long name were nice adds.

3 – GINO    - picnic time.
We are used to seeing this family by now and think it’s nice that we are growing with them. The good thing is they all don’t seem unnecessarily excited about Gino which is what is regular with other ads.

2 – ETISALAT    Celebs switch.
This true to life ad makes a lot of sense. The trio is real, and convincing. These celebs explain to you what they need in a network, why their former network provider has not been able to meet up to their needs and how Etisalat is better.

1 – MTN – Sam to Space.
If by any means you have not seen this add, the link is somewhere on this blog please follow and watch. Cool ad. It’s actually one of those ads that make you go ‘awwww’ at the end of it. Needless to say the story of a young boy trying to communicate to space and eventually succeeding sold the brand to us.

We Are Here Again!

OLX – MEET ONE OF THE STAFF

JUST SO YOU HAVNT SEEN IT:
No biggie. Nothing fanciful.

We are introduced to this beautiful lady who tells us about OLX and how to use it. She sits on a couch the whole time and is at ease. Friendly, good nature and well spoken.

FIRST THOUGHT
Another boring OLX ad.

SCORE: 4/10
With the same format of ads. We have met Mr Ade and other OLX users. We know almost anything can be sold on the site and that it is absolutely free to use. Anybody who has  watched  in the past year most likely knows about OLX and how it works so why repeat the same thing time and over? We get it. We will use the site when needed.
As a suggestion, there are numerous advertising angles to explore  such as entertainment and the likes especially since the target audience has a wide spectrum. Simply put, we are bored with this trend.

IF YOU LIKE IT:
Then you will like all the prequels. We like the first set best though – the one with Kunle Coker and the two funny guys. Just saying.

COKE – SHARE A COKE WITH…..

JUST SO WE HAVE NOT SEEN IT:
This is a promo by Coca-Cola and the ad has people sharing personalised bottles of Coke with their friends and loved ones. Good picture quality, different names and scenarios. From husbands sharing with wives to twins to colleagues to with different names cutting across all major ethnic groups in the country, this ad has got it covered.

FIRST THOUGHT
Just there

SCORE:4/10
It was obvious that the advertisers where trying to cover all possible scenarios but that was not necessary. And to make it worse, they were miming the words. As interesting as this ad is, it isn’t captivating enough and once you see it, you might not want to again as it is not compelling.

IF YOU LIKE IT:
Then you will like Fanta apple and all the other regular beverage ads.

GINO – PICNIC TIME

JUST SO YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT
This ad sees a family prepare for a picnic. The dad moving things they will need out and capturing the moments with a camcorder; the daughter fussing over what to wear; the son looking for his football pump and the mum making all the dishes for the picnic. At the end of the day, they all pay tribute to the woman of the family who always knows best not only because of Gino alone though

FIRST THOUGHT
Really cool. Nice!

SCORE: 7/10
The good thing is that the advertisers were not trying to sell Gino. They sold a happy normal average family and in that process they sell Gino. Another aspect of this that I like is that they have allowed us to follow this family overtime. Remember the first time we met them in the first installment was when she gave birth and her husband and kids went home to make her soup.  We like that as the sequels come, we have been able to progress with the and watch them grow together.  They were not shouting Gino is the best tomato paste from the beginning but rather take us into their lives and see reasons why Gino is the right choice for a tomato paste.

One aspect that I think is a tad controversial is when her daughter absolutely agrees with her mother’s choice of clothes. Come on, we know that at that age daughters and their mothers don’t usually agree on clothes choices among other things. Its all good though.

Good picture quality and matured acting. (you just want to give the father of the house a movie script already) wonderful facial expressions and nice props.

IF YOU LIKE IT:
Then you will definitely like all the prequels.
